Infrared Heater
...or far infrared emitters

Many believe that the Infrared sauna heater has revolutionized the health benefits of the sauna.

How Infrared sauna heaters work can be misunderstood.

Some people mistake the word 'infrared' with other forms of so called 'radiation'. This couldn't be further from the truth.

FIR (far infrared) waves are the safest and the most beneficial. What is radiant heat? No need to worry - Radiant heat is also called infrared energy (IR). It is NOT the same as ultraviolet radiation (known as UV which burns and damages your skin), or atomic radiation.

Radiant heat is simply a form of energy that heats objects directly through a process called conversion, without having to heat the air between.

Infrared is completely safe, and chances are you will have experienced it long before reading this article. Examples of many different applications are heat lamps, electric ovens, space heaters, electric bed under-blankets, hair dryers, water distillers, winter clothing, therapeutic wraps, floor heaters, etc. Infrared can be produced by heaters made of ceramic, quartz, halogen tubes, carbon fibers, and various types of elements, filaments and metals. All emit infrared energy.

Types of FIR Emitters

Two of The Most Common Far Infrared Heaters/Emitters

Ceramic                                                          Wire Coil

There are a few different types of IR heaters, but all have the same principal. Without being too technical here is what is available.

Ceramic infrared emitters have a conductive wire coiled around a glass tube then coated with special infrared emitting ceramic.  This is then inserted into the main ceramic tube. When an electric current passes through the coiled wire it heats the ceramic coating which produces infrared radiant heat which is then transferred to the outer ceramic tube and radiating/heating the sauna. This provides an even heat distribution.  It does help to reduce 'hot spots' and you get a lot more infrared being emitted at a cooler temperature. Being ceramic this type of heater is more expensive.

The other more common type of sauna heater is the 'open coil' style. These operate very similar to your floor heaters or space heaters, they even look like them.  If you look closely at the sauna image to the right you can see there are heaters located in strategic positions to allow for maximum benefit. The larger the sauna the more there are. They generally work the same as ceramic heaters, only without the outer casing. They are not as expensive.

To control the temperature, and the time, all modern infrared saunas come (or should come) with a digital display control panel similar to the one here.  Many configurations are available.
