Sauna Care

Prevention is a good way to minimize the necessity for constant cleaning.

It helps greatly to shower off perspiration between sauna sessions, and for each person to sit on a towel, and place a towel on the floor. This prevents the timber from absorbing perspiration and hence staining of the timber.

Warning:

Never apply paint, stain or other chemical finishes or sealant to the interior of the sauna. Heat in the room may cause the surface to become too hot to the touch and/or cause toxic fumes endangering your health.

Care and Maintenance of the
Interior and Timber

When using cleaning materials in confined or enclosed areas, be sure to wear rubber gloves, a face mask and eye protection.

Most sauna timbers are soft and easy to dent or mark. The surface of the timber is able to be repaired by giving the effected area a light hand sand using sandpaper. It's not advisable to use power tools as they can be 'too effective'.

Over a long period of time the timber may start to darken. This can be remedied by using the following treatment.

Mix the chemical solution as follows:

1.    4 ounces Oxalic Acid Crystals per gallon of warm water
2.    Add 1 cup of trisodium phosphate (TSP) per gallon
3.    Use a NON-METALLIC container only.
Caution: Oxalic Acid is poisonous and special protection must be taken.
Refer to the manufacturers guide for additional instructions.

Application:
Using a cloth or soft brush be sure to apply the solution to the entire area all at once. Wait for the wood to dry, then rinse with clear water and a damp clean cloth. Don't overdo the application. If the first application does not completely clean the surface to your satisfaction simply repeat the process.

General Cleaning

  • Ceramic tile floors - remove duckboards, wipe the floor with a damp mop and mild cleaning solution.  Regularly rinse well and replace duckboard on dry clean tile floor. Duckboard may be lightly sanded as needed to remove soil and stains.

  • Walls - where people come in contact with benches, around doors, and controls it's best to use a damp cloth or sponge with a mild solution of soap and water, regularly rinsing the damp cloth and plain water. Do not use too much water as the wood will tend to turn dark. NEVER use a hose.

  • Total Interior - If the sauna is used on a regular basis it should be swept or vacuumed once a week to remove dirt, hair, etc.

  • Exterior - Only external timber surfaces can be cleaned and maintained using a quality furniture polish.

  • End of each sauna session -  It is advisable to leave the door open to allow fresh air to circulate.

Remember, the best form of maintenance is prevention.
