There are
Home Saunas...
and there are Saunas for the Home!
The birthplace of the sauna is Finland and the Finnish people consider the sauna as a place of contemplation, family and social gatherings, and even for business meetings. Now, of course the owner of a
modern home sauna will find it a bit difficult to hold meetings in, but there is plenty of
room for you and/or the family. And it won't cost you the earth! Finnish people even look healthier.
So they should...they've been doing it for 2000 years!
It's considered that the first saunas were most likely caves that were heated by a wood fire that heated the cave walls. Later they refined the concept
to a kind of timber covered dug-out that still used firewood, but included
a collection of rocks that help maintain the heat and at the same time help reduce the smoke.
A 'dry sauna' consists of a softwood timber enclosed room with a heater that is capable of producing 'dry'
temperatures up to about 180°F (75°C). Stones are used to enhance and maintain the heat, and can be used to add small amounts of steam via the addition of water. This steam dries very quickly. A Sauna is not a steam bath since steam is 100% humidity while a
dry sauna has less than 20-25% humidity.
Infrared saunas are also dry saunas. You don't have the luxury of adding water to stones that come with other heaters. But because no water is involved during the sauna experience there is no need for waterproofing or
plumbing. You just set the room up, plug it into a power socket, and away
you go..
The steam sauna,
also known as a 'wet sauna', steam bath, Turkish bath or Russian
sauna. It is essentially a shower
room, or area, that uses a heated steam generator and steam jets to produce 100% humidity. Steam rooms are not as popular as dry saunas because setting them up at home
can be problematic. Plumbing and ventilation being the main drawbacks, along with
the general breathing discomfort. But all individuals comfort levels are different.
Saunas are made of wood, typically redwood, Western red cedar, and Alaskan yellow cedar. Softwoods are the preferred choice of manufacture not only because they have an attractive grain
pattern and absorb humidity, but because at high temperatures they remain
cooler to the touch than hardwood does.
For safety reasons the timbers are left unfinished. Any sealers and varnishes are likely to
emit harmful vapors when heated.

Things to be aware of:
Chances are most of your shopping will be done on the phone or using the internet. Ultimately you must plan what you want before shopping, and don't be afraid to ask plenty of questions and get printed literature when possible...we found a good place to start.

Types
of Saunas
This can be a tricky subject. As with all manufacturing industries, there can many descriptions that explain the same thing. Here we will list the most common terms relating to home saunas, and what they mean.
Home
Sauna Kit
As the term suggests, when you order a 'kit' everything should be included.
Some times referred to as pre-built. Walls, roof, base, door, bench/s, heater etc. It is not a kit unless you are able to just assemble the unit, plug it in and use straight away.
Even though all the panels should fit together without the need for many tools, you
do need to be comfortable with the idea of assembly.

Portable Saunas
These are terrific, because they are truly portable. Generally, any portable sauna is able to be assembled or folded away into a very small parcel and stored away, or even taken on holidays. Be aware that some
'portable' saunas made from fiberglass type materials that can be classed as portable. Though they are compact in reality, they are only transportable.

Transportable
Don't confuse trans-portable with portable. A simple example is: a home could be 'transported' from one location to another, but you certainly would not call it 'portable'.
Meaning, when reading information about a home sauna be sure not to confuse
portable with transportable. Be aware that some ' portable' saunas made from fiberglass type materials,
even timber, that can be classed as portable but in reality they are only
'compact', not portable.

Compact Saunas.
Prefabricated - (pre-fab)
Normally the same meaning as pre-cut. Refer below.
Pre-Cut
To keep the advertised price at a minimum, either intentionally or not, some manufactures supply pre-cut saunas that include the main panels, roof and a door, but
not much else. These should not be
confused with sauna kits.
