Steam Sauna

he history of the steam sauna is said to go back as far as the ancient Greeks and later adopted by the Romans.

Steam saunas have been discovered in Turkey and have been dated back thousands of years. In fact they are still often referred to as “Turkish baths”. Steam Saunas were then said to spread to Russia and the rest of Europe.

What is a Steam Sauna and How does it Differ from the Ordinary Sauna?

Both the ordinary 'dry' heat sauna and the 'wet' steam sauna produce sweating, but due to the different air conditions. The steam sauna’s temperature is between 120 - 130ºF (43 - 46º C) with relative air moisture of 100%. Whereas a normal sauna produces a maximum of around 15-20% humidity, and this is produced only when water is added to the sauna rocks.

Health Benefits of a Steam Sauna range from:

  • Relaxation and stress relief

  • weight loss, burning 300 calories per half hour

  • deep cleans, opens pores and moisturized the skin

  • rejuvenates and revitalized the mind

  • releasing dangerous toxins

  • increases the blood flow to relax muscles

  • provides a mini cardiovascular workout

The different types of steam saunas are:

Portable Steam Sauna

They do not require any installations, wiring or plumbing and most plug into any standard outlet. They can be assembled and minutes, no need for building permits.

The condensation on the wall and door simply runs back into the base of the unit and can be emptied after each steam session.

Facial Steam Sauna

If you do not have the facility of a full body sauna available, similar results can be achieved by using an electric facial sauna system. There are many available on the market.

How they work is there is a heating element on the bottom of the unit. This heats the water, and you place your face over the designed face mask. You control the amount of steam your face is exposed to by moving your face either closer or away from the steam unit.

The facial sauna often benefits people with other health conditions such as

  • blocked sinuses

  • common cold

  • asthma

  • hay fever

Fixed Steam Sauna Shower

They can be assembled or constructed by the average handy man (check your local government requirements) and are similar to a totally enclosed shower.  If at all possible it is best to slope your ceiling 1 to 2 inches away from the bather and door. They will require a qualified electrician for power and the condensation will need to run into a drain pipe.

Steps to taking a Steam Sauna

The optimal temperature of a steam sauna is between
120 - 130ºF (43 - 46º C) . This is the most pleasant temperature for the bather, as well as being the most beneficial.

It is essential there is a good control system for the steam to avoid increases in temperature and to preserve optimal conditions. The system should be able to adjust temperature, steam supply and density together with a stream of fresh air and an outlet for the used air.

As with any sauna, it is best to first take a shower. Your first time in the steam sauna should not be for more than 15-20 minutes. After which you should cool your body temperature down, avoiding body “shock”.
